As I write this it is cold and snowy outside. Deep winter is here. I know that many people dislike even dread this season. I choose to enjoy it, except when it is well below zero and I must go out. But then I do not like to go out when it is in the high 90’s and humid!
When I meet someone who has not lived in a climate with a definite, cold winter season I explain that learning to appreciate even enjoy winter requires the mastery of three tasks. First, learn how to dress for the season. You have probably heard the expression, “there is no bad weather, only bad clothes.” That saying fits perfectly. Warm-enough coats, hats, mittens, scarves, socks, and boots make one comfortable enough to spend time outdoors. In contrast, imagine if you had to spend the day at the beach in July wearing woolen long johns, a hat and mittens. How uncomfortable, even dangerous! The lesson is, wear appropriate clothing for the season and be comfortable.
Second, learn to drive in snowy conditions. This includes knowing how to judge conditions, how to safely make turns and when and how to slow down to a stop. Also, let’s face it, how to get unstuck!
And third, and just as important as the first two, find ways to have fun with the ice and snow. This means snowshoeing, skiing (downhill or cross-country), skating, hiking, snowmobiling, sliding, even biking, and so on. Some of these sports require learning, some just doing.
Dress for winter, drive in winter conditions, play in the winter elements, and be free to go about life with zest and pleasure. Imagine looking forward to another snowstorm. More snow! Great skiing conditions! Take advantage of all the winter season has to offer. And why not do this for each season of year.
