It is now a fraught and tense time. We are contending with COVID, war, and tremendous change in our world. The past two years have been rough, to say the least. I have read several articles on the benefits of having companion animals in your home. One notes the calming qualities that having animal companionship brings. Another article claims that having an animal can prolong life. Quite a claim!
As I write this, I have two animals living in my home, a dog, and a cat. And I am fortunate that while growing up, we always had a dog in our home. I have learned and continue to learn much from all these animal companions. Recently I heard someone I will call a ‘pet whisperer’ talk about the benefits that animals bestow on us humans. When we treat them with respect, love, and care, they give to us in many ways.
Here are the ways in which I know I have been blessed. Love, animals give unconditional love. Many examples come to mind. Arriving back home for the day, or returning from a trip, I am greeted with such joy. And each animal lives in the present. They hear, see, smell, and sense this moment. This can be calming, my cat would climb in my lap, purr, and rest there, I could only relax. And this sense of the present is also a good lesson. Live in the now, as this moment is all we truly have. Not only do animals live in the present; they relish it. Take a dog for a walk or play with a cat. The animal is focused on the play, on the immediate, unfolding events. This is also a good lesson for us. Be here and now and, pay attention! Don’t let time slip away unnoticed, unappreciated. Make the most of each moment, too.
Animals can also sense if we are stressed or down. My dog will try to cheer me up or distract me. I believe that our animals have more wisdom than we realize, and we can benefit from this wisdom. Think of the dogs who have awakened their owners when a fire has broken out, saving lives.
I look forward to the rewards and further learning I will receive from my animals. Thank you! I benefit so much, and it is especially apparent to me now.
